Minimum Requirements

  • PhD in Hydrology, Environmental Science, Water Resource Management, or related field
  • Minimum 10 years’ relevant experience (post-BSc qualification)
  • Registration with SACNASP as a Professional Scientist (required)
  • Valid driver’s license

Knowledge & Competencies

  • National Water Act (Act 36 of 1998) and environmental legislation
  • Scientific research methods and modelling
  • Programme and project management
  • Data analysis and technical report writing
  • Computer-aided scientific applications
  • Strong communication, planning, and leadership skills
  • Problem-solving, conflict management, and stakeholder engagement

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess water use licence applications and environmental impacts
  • Evaluate hydrological data and determine resource impacts
  • Develop and implement water resource protection measures
  • Support compliance monitoring and enforcement processes
  • Contribute to policy development and regulatory frameworks
  • Lead scientific research and modelling initiatives
  • Compile technical reports and provide recommendations
  • Engage with stakeholders (government, research bodies, consultants)
  • Mentor junior staff and support capacity building
  • Provide expert input in legal and Water Tribunal processes
