Capitec Bank, South Africa’s largest bank by customer base, has rapidly expanded its self-service Smart ID service across the country. The service is now available in all provinces, giving Capitec the widest reach among banks offering this facility.
Initially launched at just seven branches earlier this month, the bank has already added 40 more locations, bringing the total to 47 branches nationwide.
What Services Are Available?
At this stage, Smart ID services at Capitec branches are limited to:
- Replacing a lost, stolen, or damaged Smart ID card
- Upgrading from the green ID book to a Smart ID card
Note: First-time Smart ID applications are not yet available at branches.
Who Can Use the Service?
- The service is only available to Capitec customers
- Fees are charged directly to Capitec accounts
- No booking is required — simply visit a participating branch

- Total cost: R150
- R140 (standard Department of Home Affairs fee)
- R10 (Capitec service fee)
- Application takes less than 5 minutes
- Fully integrated with Home Affairs systems for secure, real-time processing
- You’ll receive a notification when your Smart ID is ready for collection
Nationwide Rollout Progress
This rollout supports the Department of Home Affairs’ goal of reaching 100 bank branches by the end of March.
Other banks such as Standard Bank have also introduced Smart ID services at selected branches. Combined with existing services from banks like Absa, Nedbank, FNB, Investec, and Discovery, there are now 83 branches offering Smart ID services nationwide.
The Department aims to expand this to 1,000 bank branches by 2028.
