Purpose of the Role

The General Engineering Superintendent is responsible for managing and executing R&D, continuous improvement, and capital projects. The role also oversees equipment reliability and asset care management to ensure plant availability and operational efficiency.

The position ensures compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Codes of Practice (COPs), and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).


Key Responsibilities

Project & Asset Management

  • Manage R&D, continuous improvement, and capital projects
  • Develop project scopes and oversee execution
  • Improve and optimise existing equipment
  • Implement and improve maintenance technologies
  • Maintain engineering documentation
  • Control budgets and support business objectives

Maintenance & Reliability

  • Plan and coordinate shutdowns and planned maintenance
  • Conduct plant inspections and identify inefficiencies
  • Perform maintenance data analysis (e.g., Pareto and correlation analyses)
  • Apply root cause failure analysis (RCFA) and problem-solving techniques
  • Monitor equipment failure trends and reduce downtime
  • Champion condition monitoring and reliability improvement initiatives
  • Review and improve maintenance standards and task lists

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure all activities comply with OHSA and relevant standards
  • Stop and report safety contraventions immediately
  • Advise management on hazardous equipment conditions
  • Apply risk assessment and mitigation strategies
  • Ensure safe task execution and audit completed work

Operational & Team Management

  • Manage contractors within the assigned area
  • Lead and support the engineering department
  • Liaise with other departments
  • Perform standby duties and act in higher roles when required
  • Work independently and within teams

Minimum Qualifications

  • Grade 12 / NQF Level 4
  • B-Tech, BEng, BSc, or National Diploma in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (Required)
  • Leadership training (Advantageous)
  • GCC Factories (Advantageous)

Experience & Skills Required

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in heavy industry
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in project management
  • Experience in:
    • Reliability engineering
    • Maintenance engineering
    • Project management
    • Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA)
  • Strong problem-solving ability
  • Computer literacy
  • Valid Code 08 driver’s license and own transport

Inherent Requirement

  • Must be medically fit
